We do not sell or share your personal information. That has always been our practice, and it applies to every reader. This page explains what that means, how we honor Global Privacy Control and how to make a request to access, delete or correct your information.

Our commitment

Insurance Compared Daily:

  • Does not sell your personal information to anyone, for money or anything else of value
  • Does not share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising (ads targeted at you based on your activity across different websites)
  • Never passes your details to insurers, agents, brokers or lead buyers

We collect very little information in the first place: what you send through our contact form (name, email, topic and message), what you give our newsletter form (email and preferred language), basic technical data our hosting provider Cloudflare processes for security and delivery, and two small settings stored in your browser. Our privacy policy explains this in full.

What “sell” and “share” mean

Privacy laws give these words special meanings:

  • To sell personal information means giving it to another business for money or anything else of value.
  • To share personal information means giving it to another business for cross-context behavioral advertising, even if no money changes hands.

We do neither. Giving information to service providers that work only on our behalf, such as our hosting provider or our email-list provider, is not a sale or share under these laws, because those providers may only use it to provide their services to us.

Information we collect

State privacy laws ask businesses to list the kinds of personal information they collect. Here is ours:

We do not collect sensitive personal information for purposes that would give you the right to limit its use.

Global Privacy Control (GPC)

Global Privacy Control is a signal some browsers and browser extensions send to tell websites you do not want your personal information sold or shared. We honor GPC. When we detect it, we treat it as a valid opt-out request for that browser. You do not need to contact us separately.

Your rights

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CCPA/CPRA) and similar laws in other states, you may have the right to:

RightWhat it means
Know and accessAsk what personal information we hold about you and get a copy
DeleteAsk us to delete personal information we hold about you

We honor these requests for all US readers, wherever they live.

How to make a request

Email with the subject line “Privacy request.” You can also use our contact form.

In your message, please tell us:

  1. Which right you want to use (for example: access, delete, correct or opt out)
  2. The email address you used with us, such as for the newsletter or a message you sent
  3. Any details that help us find your information

Please do not send Social Security numbers, policy numbers, driver’s license numbers or payment details. We do not need them.

How we verify your request

To protect your information, we need to confirm that a request really comes from you.

  • Opt-out requests do not need verification.
  • Access, deletion and correction requests need verification. We will usually ask you to confirm that you control the email address linked to the information, for example by replying from that address.
  • We ask only for what we need to verify you, and we use it only for that purpose.

If we cannot verify your identity, we will tell you and explain why.

Authorized agents

You can ask someone else, called an authorized agent, to make a request for you. If an agent contacts us, we may:

  • Ask for your signed permission for the agent to act for you
  • Ask you to confirm your identity directly with us
  • Accept a valid power of attorney as proof

We may decline a request from an agent who cannot show they are authorized.

How long it takes

We respond within 45 days of receiving your request, as laws such as the CCPA require. If we need more time, as the law allows, we will tell you why within the first 45 days. Making a request is free.

If we decline a request

Sometimes the law lets us keep certain information, such as records we need to show we handled your privacy request. If we cannot fully meet a request, we will explain why. Where your state’s law gives you a right to appeal, we will tell you how.

Readers outside California

California was the first state with a broad consumer privacy law, but many other states now have similar laws. Their rules and deadlines differ. To keep things simple and fair, we offer the same rights and the same 45-day response time to every reader in the United States, wherever they live.
